NOTES ON VERUCCHIO

Altitude: 330 meters above sea level

Verucchio was chosen as an ideal place to live three thousand years ago.

From the top of it's rocky peak, Verucchio dominates the lower Marecchia river valley as well as the coastal area around Rimini. Back then it was much appreciated for it's strategic position and it's fertile land.

An extraordinarily refined civilization developed in Verucchio which has left important testimony of it's existence in the form of beautiful and precious works of art, evidence of a rich and flourishing community.

The "field of treasure" necropolis, discovered by chance in 1893, brought to light the unequivocal signs of an ancient past, of a civilization which has intrigued historians and archeologists: the Villanovan civilization.

In the excavations that followed numerous items of great historical value and interest, many of them practically unique, such as wooden utensils and cloth, not to mention a fabulous carved wooden throne conserved intact due to Verucchio's soil. Today these items, which have answered many questions about the Villanovans can be seen in the Civic Archeology Museum, housed in the ancient monastery of Sant'Agostino.

Verucchio was one of the first commercial colonies, governed by a warrior oligarchy of clear Etruscan origin, which prospered thanks to the flowering commerce along the Adriatic coast. The colony disappeared, probably due to the Celtic invasions in the sixth century BC, but long before the decline of the Etruscan civilization in Tuscany and Lazio.

The noble Malatesta (literally "Bad Head") family arrived in Verucchio many centuries later, in the first half of the twelfth century AD.

The Malatestas chose Verucchio to build an imposing fortress, and gave life to a flourishing community, adopting the city as their own.

Verucchio
From Verucchio Mastin Vecchio (literally "Old Mastiff"), of the Malatesta family, mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy, conquered Rimini, point of departure for his families rise to power, which it continued to exercise over the area for 300 years.

Verucchio has managed to conserve many of it's medieval characteristics, including the Malatesta castle.
